While much of the interface still feels very PC, you can use touch controls to move about the map and control units in combat. One of the biggest changes are the added touch controls for tablets. It doesn't do much to improve or modernize the experience. Heroes of Might and Magic III HD is a port, not a remake. Scenarios can have a wide range of goals, but often it will involve conquering other players' strongholds or finding magical artifacts. Your hero can also use magic in combat, which will often be key to victory. Using these properly is the key to success. There is a combination of ranged and melee units. Combat is turned based with units moving based on initiative. Combat can occur between yourself and other players or monsters on the map. Scattered across the map are resource generating buildings, magic items, wandering monsters, and many more places to explore. This is where you can recruit new soldiers and build new upgrades to increase your income. The hub of your empire is your stronghold. Rather than constructing new cities like in Civilization, you are expanding by conquering already existing strongholds on a map. You control a hero who leads an army of soldiers, creatures, monsters, etc. Can you go back to Heroes of Might and Magic III? I know many of you have much stronger memories (and, you know, actually played the game the way it was intended). We never really grasped the strategy of the game, rather we just played around, exploring this fantasy world.
